The relationship of happiness and the society

The relationship of happiness and the society
To be honest, this is truly a great topic to me which I am not sure if I could handle, since even for myself, I am not quite sure about what happiness exactly stand or represents for. Besides the uncertainty of me to the word “happiness”, people define the concept of happiness in different ways owing to their very own experience in life. For example, It may probably differ from one stage of life to another, it may be effected by our system of values, it may be taught in our traditional cultural, and so on. But there must be one most important and basic understanding toward the word “happiness” which therefore built out the concept we define it by.

During the history class this morning, the professor began the class by asking “How many of you heard of the Harvard Open Course of Positive Psychology?” and later on he talked about the some ideas professor TalBen-Shahar talked in his course.A person with happiness must have a specific goal which brings along joyousness and importance before pursuing it. A truly happy person will live in the way they feel most meaningful and enjoy every moment of it. Nowadays, since we lived in such utilitarianism society, we can try to measure happiness as a profit-seeking business, if that will be easier for most of the people to understand. By the definition professor TalBen-Shahar suggested what a truly happy person should be like, and if happiness is the only standard to measure life, then that would be the ultimate goal for each of us to pursue. It works in the same way when people measure the success of business, the only standard is money, that is whatever is not related with finance will not be considered. However, when dealing with finance problems, profits and loss are the two issues we could not ignore. So, if compare measuring happiness to measuring the success of business, how come there in no gain and loss in happiness?

To say it more specifically, when looking at our life, we can take the negative emotions as the loss and while the positive emotions as the gain. So when our positive emotions are more than negative emotions, we eventually feel more profit in happiness. When the world country profits more in happiness than in business, will there be much less crimes or social issue among us? Of course, in different stage of life, we would encounter struggles and frustrations, for example losing the ones we loved or go through failures, but time eventually heals all of the sorrows. Moreover, we cannot immerse in the same sadness for too long, cause once you did it, then you are not living your life, you are just simple wasting it unwisely. There is never a thing we cannot overcome; the only thing we could not fight through is mostly ourselves. So, why making life even harder for yourself when there is much more meaningful thing waiting for you to accomplish?

  1. How do people communicate happiness? Are there cross-national differences in happiness? Are they cultural bias or cultural effects? You can focus on the language of emotion or on the measurement of hapiness.

  5. I think happiness is important to everybody, and the meaning of happiness is also different for each one. This issue make me have interest in it. Maybe you can interview different people from different genders, departments, jobs and countries. You may find some similar and different phenomenon in human's mind combining theories and ideals from professors that you mention in article. For example, a person with happiness must have a specific goal which brings along joyousness and importance before pursuing it. A truly happy person will live in the way they feel most meaningful and enjoy every moment of it. You can try to investigate people's lives with interesting opinion.

  6. The definition of happiness comes in various forms according to different environment, society, culture and individual's value. I think the topic can be expanded into following discussion aspects:
    1. The types of being happy for a person, like physical or mental happiness
    2. The levels of happiness and how it changes, depending on environmental causes
    3. Is there any different concept of defining happiness in past time and modern time? If there is, what makes the difference happen?

  7. Dear Milano, happiness is truly a great topic. In your issue paper, are you going to discuss the definition of happiness and its relationship with the society? When I finished reading your article, it seems that you write more about one of the definitions of happiness. Maybe you are struggled with what is the meaning of happiness to you? In this case, I suggest you go and find the works of some philosophers to see how they define happiness and its meaning to one’s life. Besides, you can ask yourself why you find it important to understand and what you really care about happiness.

  8. Although the importance of happiness is played a high value by common people, the definition of happiness is very different from person to person and from group to group. I think that is the reason why the open course of positive psychology will be so popular with students in Harvard. And I think the term that happiness is too abstract, so maybe you can try to present more depictions about your view point.

  9. What is real happiness and what is not a real happiness? It's hard to define directly. From your topic, "The relationship of happiness and the society", i will guess that the article is about how happiness influence the society. I think it does has great affect on society. Happiness is powerful that it can improve the whole society's atmosphere! It's will be more specific to find some examples to show it. How should happiness influence society? I'm really looking forward to your issue!

  10. It is quite interesting to quantify happiness into number and calculate the profit in contrast to business. It is also an issue which is important but usually ignored since everybody knows the importance of happiness but few can really get a picture of it. How we define happiness when people tend to say "try to see the different aspects of things", "nothing is absolutely" is also a question worth discussing.

  11. I like the way you make your ending. You pop out a couple of questions for you, yourself, and also others to think about them. And I think they could be some of the expansion of your ideas. And all of them are quite interesting to me. Besides, you mention utilitarianism. It makes my eyes widen because both of us take one same course: Morality and Beautiful Life. And the professor talked a lot about Utilitarianism in which everything can be measured including Maximum Happiness. What a pity you only use one sentence to mention happiness under Utilitarianism. Maybe you could discuss it more, and I think it would be very impressive.
